Cameo was a popular Funk band in the '70s and '80s. This hit fused their Funk background with elements of rap, giving them a big hit.

In 90s, "Word Up!" was first covered by Scottish rock band Gun, later covered by Mel B (known as Melanie G). Also covered by American nu metal band Korn and British girl group Little Mix.
